A1. Complete the web with information regarding the flags carried by Tenzing. (2)

The flags carried by Tenzing were of

When we left Camp Nine on Friday morning, I was determined to get to the top on this day. That morning I remember thinking, “I was to get to the top even if I die.” I was not afraid to die that day.  We set out early and all the way from Camp Nine to the peak we alternated.
I would take the lead and then Hillary. The man who follows when climbing has a difficult job both in climbing up and climbing down. He is the anchor. The man going in the lead cuts the steps and breaks the way.
In my pocket I had four flags. When we were still at Camp Four, Colonel Hunt gave me three flags, those of Britain, the United Nations and Nepal. He charged me with the duty of planting them on the top of the world.
“These three flags are in your care,” he said. “When you and Hillary reach the top, put them at the peak. I am sure that you and Hillary are going to do it.”
I told Colonel Hunt that I was carrying the Indian flag with me and I would like to be on the top with the other flags. I had to ask Colonel Hunt’s permission in his capacity as leader of the expedition.
Indian Flag
Colonel Hunt said, “By all means, I am glad to know that you brought an Indian flag”.
After one hour of steady going, we cut across from the south face and started up the west side where we had to pass up a steep line of rocks. This was slow and difficult. Once we had cleared these, there was nothing barring our way to top but a snow-covered incline, sloping less and less as it neared the top.
These last sixty or seventy feet up the top were not very dangerous. But we kept up the same steady pace. And we reached the small, flattened summit almost together :
During the last fifty feet from the peak, Hillary and I were moving about twenty feet apart. We were tied together with a rope. Most of the time the rope was loose, but when we went over dangerous ground, we drew it taut.
This rope was a symbol. It tied us together. One could not move without the other. We were not two individuals, but a team.

i) The purpose of the newspaper is to provide……….and ………to the readers.
ii) Reporters create …….and …….in the news report.

Newspapers, especially of the popular variety, aim to do two things; to inform and to entertain. Entertainment may be principally found in the Centre pages of newspaper, in some of the feature articles and some local stories. The principle aim of the short news report on the front page is to inform.
Most newspapers are published daily and the news reporters must make sure that they have up-to –the minute news. In their news reports they will aim to create a sense of immediacy, to convey the impression that they have rushed the news to the reader and that the information contained is the very latest.
Reporters also wish to create a sense of authenticity, that is, that their news is accurate and genuine. They may thus refer to their sources, to the spokesmen who informed them, perhaps quoting their very words.to show that what has been produced is the real news.
Just as reporters appear to be in a hurry to find out and then retell their facts too. So, the readers of the daily newspaper are often in a hurry, trying to read as much of the news as possible before rushing off to work. This is perhaps what dictates one very common format for news reports. According to this format, the first paragraph or two of the news report contains most of the main points of the story, in a condensed or summary form. The following paragraph go over all the main points again, but this time adding more details. Thus the reader who is in hurry can get main idea of the story by reading just the initial paragraphs. The editor of the paper also benefits from this format, for if he or she runs out of space in the paper, some of the last paragraphs of the story can be deleted without too much harm.

Q.3 A. Read the extract and complete the activities given below (10)
Between Nose and Eyes a strange contest arose,-
The Spectacles set them unhappily wrong;
The point in dispute was , as all the world knows,
To which the said spectacles ought to belong.

So Tongue was the lawyer , and argued that cause
With great deal of skill  and a wig of learning;
While Chief Baron Ear sat to balance the laws,
So famed for his talent in nicely discerning.
'In behalf of the Nose it will quickly appear,
And your lordship,' he said, 'will undoubtedly find,
That the Nose has had spectacles always in wear,
Which amounts to possession time out of mind.'
Then holding the spectacles up to the court,
'Your lordship observes they are made with a straddle
As wide as the ridge of the Nose is; in short, Designed to sit close to it, just like a saddle.
'Again would your lordship a moment suppose,
('Tis a case that has happened, and may be again)
That the visage or countenance had not a Nose,
Pray who would, or who could, wear spectacles then? 'On the whole it appears, and my argument shows,
With a reasoning the court will never condemn,
That the spectacles plainly were made for the Nose,
And the Nose was as plainly intended for them.'

Goats ate the leaves, the grass cutter scythe
Split it apart and a monsoon blight
Shrivelled the slender stem...... Even so,
Next spring I watched three new shoots grow,
The young tree struggle, upward thrust
Its arms in a fresh fierce lust
