To Sir, with love Chapter no17- Summary

The Half-Yearly Report of the Students' Council, an assembly entirely arranged and presented by the students themselves, is held on November 15. Miss Joseph and Denham preside, and the meeting begins with an address by Mr. Florian, the headmaster. Following his lengthy but well-received presentation, each class takes a turn reporting, through their chosen representatives, on what they have been studying in each subject so far. Finally, a panel of teachers is chosen for each class to answer any questions pertaining to the reports which have been given. The lowest class begins first, and it is obvious that as the students progress through the ranks there is "a marked development in their ability to express themselves." Mr. Braithwaite's class, being the oldest, goes last.

Miss Joseph begins the highest class's proceedings by explaining that the common theme underlying all their studies this term is the interdependency of mankind. Potter speaks in the field of math, focusing on how greater understanding in the world is fostered by the use of common weights and measures. Miss Pegg and Jackson speak on geography, and Miss Dare and Fernman discuss the subject of physiology, with Fernman stealing the show by exhibiting a model of a human skeleton and stressing the class' conclusion that "basically all people were the same." Miss Dodd reports on history, and Miss Joseph on domestic science. Denham creates a stir by speaking on the required subject of P.T. and games, complaining that the class "was ill-conceived and pointless.

Mr. Weston, Mrs. Dale-Evans, and Miss Phillips are chosen at random to answer student questions arising from the senior presentations. When Denham pursues his inquiry on the necessity of requiring all students to take P.T., Mr. Weston responds quite ridiculously, trying to bluster his way out of the subject, and offering no coherent argument for the requirement's continuance. Surprisingly, quiet Miss Phillips steps in and gives a sturdy defense of the practice, and Denham, knowing that he has been outwitted, has no choice but to respectfully cease his heated protest (Chapter 17)

💫Speech on Gandhi Jayanti and Lal Bahadur Shastri Jayanti, 2nd October*.🇮🇳🇮🇳

A very good morning to everyone.Honourable president, the principal of our college,Mr/Mrs......., respected teachers and my dear friends, today ,we have gathered here to celebrate the birth anniversaries of both eminent personalities i.e Mahatma Gandhi and Lal Bahadur Shastri.

*De di hame aazadi, bina khadag bina dhaal, Sabarmati ke sant tune kar  diya kamal*....it means without using any weapon ,saint of Sabarmati i.e Mahatma Gandhi  gave us freedom.Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born on 2nd October 1869 at Porbandar in Gujrat .He took his education at Bhavnagar. Then he went to England to become the barrister. He completed his law in 1888 and started his legal practice in South Africa. At that time our country was ruled by the British. Some Indian people were living in Natal colony in South Africa who were treated brutally and unjustly by the British.Gandhiji determined  to give up his practice as a lawyer  and plunged into the Indian freedom struggle. He became the president of Indian National Congress in 1920 after the death of Lokmanya Tilak .He led many movements, such as non -cooperation movement (1920)Dandi march(salt Satyagraha) under the movement Civil Disobedience (1930),Quit India movement (1942)and so on.He fought against the British by using his powerful weapons, truth and non-violence.So,he was called the devotee of truth and non violence. In his honour, United Nations' General Assembly has announced *2nd October as the International world non-violence day* on15thJune 2007.

He was an Indian  Lawyer,anti- coloñial nationalist, ethicist, social reformer and a great writer. *My Experiments with Truth* was his autobiography. He  also started two newspapers named  *Harijan  and Young India.* He advocated cleanliness drive. He tried to eradicate the untouchability custom and other evils from Indian society. He also tried for empowering women's right and developing Indian economy.

*Ruskin Bond and Leo Tolstoy* were his favourite authors. His political Guru was Gopal Krishna Gokhale .He was greatly impressed by two plays named  *Raja Harishchandra and Shravan Pitru Bhakti.* *Raghupati Raghav Raja Ram and Vaishnav Jan Te,tene kahiye*...were his favourite songs/bhajans.He advocated the use of swadeshi goods and khaadi. *Simple living and high thinking* was his motto. He gave the lesson of self reliant. He acted as  he spoke. He also commited mistakes like theft and  telling lies in his childhood but he admitted/confessed his  guilts /wrong deeds .This fact is also mentioned in his autobiography. It shows that he was a devotee of truth. On seeing his life and work,we get many moral lessons.Such a great person was assassinated on 30th January 1948 at New Delhi by Nathuram Godse.

The second eminent personality before us  *whose stature might not be big but the fame is beyond comparison  i.e  'Murti lahan, pan kirti mahan*' is Lal Bahadur Shastri. He was born on 2nd October 1904 at Mughalsarai,Utter Pradesh.

His father was Sharada Prasad Shrivastava and mother was Ramdulari Devi. And his surname was Shrivastava. He graduated with the title of *Shastri* it means scholar/learned in the scriptures. It was the part of his bachelor's degree award. But this title got into his name and he was known as *Lal Bahadur Shastri*.He completed his graduation from Kashi (Varanasi) University.

He was very much influenced by Mahatma Gandhi. He became the life member of *Lok Seva Mandal* founded by Lala Lajpat Rai.He started to work for the upliftment of the society. *Jai Jawan ,Jai Kisan* was his slogan.Jawan means soldier and kisan means farmer. Jawan protects us and farmer provides food for us. So these two persons are important for us.

He became the second prime minister of India after Nehruji. He promoted the white revolution to increase the production and supply of milk.He also promoted the Green Revolution .He was imprisoned several times. He was a man of inner strength, humble and tolerant. He had the vision of Nation's  progress. He was a great politician.Such versatile person passed away on11th January 1966 at the age of 61,at Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

Really, these two persons' work and lives are inspiration for all of us.I conclude  my speech by paying my tribute to these two true leaders i.e Mahatma Gandhi and Lal Bahadur Shastri.

Jai Hind ,Jai Bharat.
