Book Review-“Wings of Fire: An Autobiography of Abdul Kalam”

 Book Review

  1. A review will offer a concise plot summary of the book.
  2. A book review will offer an evaluation of the work.
  3. A book review will offer a recommendation for the audience

Book Review-“Wings of Fire: An Autobiography of Abdul Kalam” by Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam and Arun Tiwari

 ARGHA CHAKRABORTY

“Wings of Fire: An Autobiography of Abdul Kalam”  is written by Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam and Arun Tiwari. This book is an autobiography of Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, former president of India. This story sheds light on the journey of a young boy from Rameswaram to become a renowned scientist. It reflects how simple living, dedication, strong will and hard work led to success. It also shows how cultural unity impacts the lives of individuals.

The story begins with Kalam as a boy  around 1930 in the village of Rameswaram where he lived with his parents and four brothers and one sister. In this book, the author tells us how the role of family, relatives, friends, and society contribute to an individual’s life. Kalam describes his village where everyone lives in harmony. Religious discrimination was unknown at that time. A passage that shows the closeness  they had: “The high priest of Rameswaram temple, Pakshi Lakshmana Sastry, was a very close friend of my father’s. One of the most vivid memories of my early childhood is of the two men, each in his traditional attire, discussing spiritual matters.”

When he was very young, Kalam wanted to join the Indian Airforce but he was not able to clear the interview. Far from being demotivated, he focused more on studies, started his career in Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE), and was involved in the design of a hovercraft. He went to NASA on a training program. He moved to Indian Space Research and there he met Vikram Sarabhai. He also met many geniuses who inspired him. The book also describes leadership and teamwork, while making the projects. It shows how a  man becomes a leader whenever there is a successful project or a failed one.

The book reveals extensive and detailed project work by Dr. APJ Kalam, which I find distracting from the story of his life. Some readers may find this detailed descriptions boring and unappealing. It highlights the successful execution of “Agni” and other projects.

The book narrates India’s technological achievements at a time, few nations can boast of. It speaks about some brilliant minds who worked behind Indian space research such as Vikram Sarabhai and Dr. Brahm Prakash and their contribution towards ISRO.

As a reader, this book initially is very interesting particularly the portions from his younger days to a college student like how his family encouraged him. Later, the writing becomes a bit monotonous as it gives minute illustrations of the projects. At the end, he offers advice to the younger generation not to get demotivated and lead a positive life.

This book demonstrates how Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam’s simple living and positive thinking became an inspiration for the Indian youth.

Annual Activity Sheet
        Class XI
Time 3hrs                                          Marks  80
SECTION I – PROSE
(Reading for Comprehension, Language Study, Summary, Note-Making/Mind Mapping)

Q. 1 A. Read the extract and complete the activities given below. (12)

ln north-east Sussex a great tongue of land runs
into Kent. It is a land of woods - the old hammerwoods of the Sussex iron industry and among the woods gleam the hammerponds. Owing to the thickness of the woods, the road that passes Mrs. Adis's cottage is dark long before the fields beyond. That night there was no twilight and no moon, only a few pricks of fire in the black sky above the trees. But what the darkness hid the silence revealed. In the absolute stillness of the night, windless and clear, every sound was distinct, intensified. The distant bark of a dog at Delmonden sounded close at hand, and the man who walked on the road could hear the echo of his own footsteps following him like a knell.
Every now and then he made an effort to go more quietly, but the roadside was a mass of thorns, and their crackling and rustling were nearly as loud as the thud of his feet on the road. Besides, they made him go slowly, and he had no time for that.
When he came to Mrs.  Adis’s cottage he paused a moment. Only a small patch of grass lay between it and the road, and he looked in at the lighted, uncurtained window. He could see Mrs. Adisstooping over the fire, taking some pot or kettle off it. He hesitated and seemed to wonder. He was a big, heavy, working man, not successful, judging by the poverty of his appearance. For a moment he made as if he would open the window, then he changed his mind and went to the door instead.
He did not knock, but walked straight in.
The woman at the fire turned quickly round.
‘What, you, Peter Crouch !’ she said. ‘I didn't hear you knock.’
‘I didn’t knock ma’am. I didn’t want anybody to hear.’
‘How’s that?’
‘I’ m in trouble.’ His hands were shaking a little.
'What have you done?’
I shot a man, Mrs. Adis.
‘You?’
‘Yes - I shot him.’
‘You killed him?’
‘I don’t know.’
For a moment there was silence in the small, stuffy kitchen. Then the kettle boiled over and Mrs• a small woman Adis mechanically put it at the side of the fire.
She was a small, thin woman with a brown, hard face, on which the skin had dried in innumerable small, hair like wrinkles. She was probably not more than forty-two, but life treats some women hard in the agricultural districts of Sussex, and Mrs. Adis life had been harder than most.

Even though more and more women have started taking up full – time jobs outside the house, they still end up doing nearly all the housework. In spite of a demanding career, a woman is expected to be an

efficient housewife, but most men still do not make good house – husband. When it comes to helping
with a housework many men feel totally helpless. When they decided to do a few jobs around the house, they only pick up the ones they enjoy. Sometimes if they are in the mood, they don’t mind doing

According to survey done recently, the lady of the house does three quarters of the boring household chores, even women still see their family role as the matters most. transportation includes both animal and man. Vehicular transport in developing countries
includes the ancient bullock carts as well as the modern automobiles.
The introduction of railways has been vital in the growth of industrialization. They are  useful in carrying heavy bulky goods over long distances.
Water transport is one of the oldest forms of cargo transport. Water transport includes inland and ocean transport. Inland waterways include rivers and canals. Ocean or sea transport

Keeping cities clean is essential for keeping their residents healthy. Our health depends not just on personal hygiene and nutrition, but critically also on how clean we keep our cities and their surroundings. The challenge of processing and treat ing the different streams of solid waste, and safe disposal of the residuals in scientific landfills, has received much less attention in municipal solid waste management. City compost from biodegradable waste provides an alternative to farm yard manure. (like cow. dung). It provides an opportunity to simultaneously clean up our cities and help improve agricultural productivity and quality of the Soil, Organic manure or compoet plays a very important role as a supplement to chemical fertilizers in enriching the nutrient-deficient soils. city compost can be the new player in the field. Benefits of compost on the farm are well-known. When I had money, money, O! I knew no joy till I went poor; For many a false man as a friend Came knocking all day at my door.

Much have I thought of life, and seen How poor men's hearts are ever light; And how their wives do hum like bees. About their work from morn till night.

So, when I hear these poor ones laugh, And see the rich ones coldly frown poor men, think I, need not go up So much as rich men should come down.

When I had money, money. O! My many friends proved all untrue; But now I have no money, O! My friends are real, thought very few.
