To Sir, with love Chapter no17- Summary

The Half-Yearly Report of the Students' Council, an assembly entirely arranged and presented by the students themselves, is held on November 15. Miss Joseph and Denham preside, and the meeting begins with an address by Mr. Florian, the headmaster. Following his lengthy but well-received presentation, each class takes a turn reporting, through their chosen representatives, on what they have been studying in each subject so far. Finally, a panel of teachers is chosen for each class to answer any questions pertaining to the reports which have been given. The lowest class begins first, and it is obvious that as the students progress through the ranks there is "a marked development in their ability to express themselves." Mr. Braithwaite's class, being the oldest, goes last.

Miss Joseph begins the highest class's proceedings by explaining that the common theme underlying all their studies this term is the interdependency of mankind. Potter speaks in the field of math, focusing on how greater understanding in the world is fostered by the use of common weights and measures. Miss Pegg and Jackson speak on geography, and Miss Dare and Fernman discuss the subject of physiology, with Fernman stealing the show by exhibiting a model of a human skeleton and stressing the class' conclusion that "basically all people were the same." Miss Dodd reports on history, and Miss Joseph on domestic science. Denham creates a stir by speaking on the required subject of P.T. and games, complaining that the class "was ill-conceived and pointless.

Mr. Weston, Mrs. Dale-Evans, and Miss Phillips are chosen at random to answer student questions arising from the senior presentations. When Denham pursues his inquiry on the necessity of requiring all students to take P.T., Mr. Weston responds quite ridiculously, trying to bluster his way out of the subject, and offering no coherent argument for the requirement's continuance. Surprisingly, quiet Miss Phillips steps in and gives a sturdy defense of the practice, and Denham, knowing that he has been outwitted, has no choice but to respectfully cease his heated protest (Chapter 17)

            Speech Writing

              Composed by

Vaishali Jane Madam

💫Speech on Gandhi Jayanti and Lal Bahadur Shastri Jayanti, 2nd October*.🇮🇳🇮🇳

A very good morning to everyone.Honourable president, the principal of our college,Mr/Mrs......., respected teachers and my dear friends, today ,we have gathered here to celebrate the birth anniversaries of both eminent personalities i.e Mahatma Gandhi and Lal Bahadur Shastri.

*De di hame aazadi, bina khadag bina dhaal, Sabarmati ke sant tune kar  diya kamal*....it means without using any weapon ,saint of Sabarmati i.e Mahatma Gandhi  gave us freedom.Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born on 2nd October 1869 at Porbandar in Gujrat .He took his education at Bhavnagar. Then he went to England to become the barrister. He completed his law in 1888 and started his legal practice in South Africa. At that time our country was ruled by the British. Some Indian people were living in Natal colony in South Africa who were treated brutally and unjustly by the British.Gandhiji determined  to give up his practice as a lawyer  and plunged into the Indian freedom struggle. He became the president of Indian National Congress in 1920 after the death of Lokmanya Tilak .He led many movements, such as non -cooperation movement (1920)Dandi march(salt Satyagraha) under the movement Civil Disobedience (1930),Quit India movement (1942)and so on.He fought against the British by using his powerful weapons, truth and non-violence.So,he was called the devotee of truth and non violence. In his honour, United Nations' General Assembly has announced *2nd October as the International world non-violence day* on15thJune 2007.

He was an Indian  Lawyer,anti- coloñial nationalist, ethicist, social reformer and a great writer. *My Experiments with Truth* was his autobiography. He  also started two newspapers named  *Harijan  and Young India.* He advocated cleanliness drive. He tried to eradicate the untouchability custom and other evils from Indian society. He also tried for empowering women's right and developing Indian economy.

*Ruskin Bond and Leo Tolstoy* were his favourite authors. His political Guru was Gopal Krishna Gokhale .He was greatly impressed by two plays named  *Raja Harishchandra and Shravan Pitru Bhakti.* *Raghupati Raghav Raja Ram and Vaishnav Jan Te,tene kahiye*...were his favourite songs/bhajans.He advocated the use of swadeshi goods and khaadi. *Simple living and high thinking* was his motto. He gave the lesson of self reliant. He acted as  he spoke. He also commited mistakes like theft and  telling lies in his childhood but he admitted/confessed his  guilts /wrong deeds .This fact is also mentioned in his autobiography. It shows that he was a devotee of truth. On seeing his life and work,we get many moral lessons.Such a great person was assassinated on 30th January 1948 at New Delhi by Nathuram Godse.

The second eminent personality before us  *whose stature might not be big but the fame is beyond comparison  i.e  'Murti lahan, pan kirti mahan*' is Lal Bahadur Shastri. He was born on 2nd October 1904 at Mughalsarai,Utter Pradesh.

His father was Sharada Prasad Shrivastava and mother was Ramdulari Devi. And his surname was Shrivastava. He graduated with the title of *Shastri* it means scholar/learned in the scriptures. It was the part of his bachelor's degree award. But this title got into his name and he was known as *Lal Bahadur Shastri*.He completed his graduation from Kashi (Varanasi) University.

He was very much influenced by Mahatma Gandhi. He became the life member of *Lok Seva Mandal* founded by Lala Lajpat Rai.He started to work for the upliftment of the society. *Jai Jawan ,Jai Kisan* was his slogan.Jawan means soldier and kisan means farmer. Jawan protects us and farmer provides food for us. So these two persons are important for us.

He became the second prime minister of India after Nehruji. He promoted the white revolution to increase the production and supply of milk.He also promoted the Green Revolution .He was imprisoned several times. He was a man of inner strength, humble and tolerant. He had the vision of Nation's  progress. He was a great politician.Such versatile person passed away on11th January 1966 at the age of 61,at Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

Really, these two persons' work and lives are inspiration for all of us.I conclude  my speech by paying my tribute to these two true leaders i.e Mahatma Gandhi and Lal Bahadur Shastri.

Jai Hind ,Jai Bharat.

Speech on 'Duties of an ideal citizen '

B) Write a speech about 100 words on the topic" 'Duties of an ideal citizen '" to be delivered in your classroom.

B) Speech Writing.: 3

'Duties of an ideal citizen'
Respected teachers and my dear friends, at first, a very good  morning to all of you.
It gives me immense pleasure to express my thoughts  on an important topic 'Duties of an ideal citizen '

What makes a nations pillars high
And its foundation strong?
.........
Not gold, but only men can make
A people great and strong;
Men who, for truth and honor's sake,
Stand fast and suffer
-Ralph Waldo Emerson
A citizen is a person living in a particular country. An ideal citizen is the pride and basis of any society.

An ideal citizen is honest, hard working , well educated and patriotic. He surrenders himself for the sake of the nation. Mahatma Gandhiji, Pandit Nehru ji, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel ji etc were true citizens of India. They fought for the nation and it's because of them that we got Independence.

Ideal citizen willingly follows the rules and regulations of the country. He helps authority's in maintaining the law and order. He never tries to harm others , he performs his duty with full enthusiasm and responsibility. He is well aware of his duties and perform his duties always. Other citizens try to follow him.

An ideal citizen participates in exercising his vote and electing the representatives. A good citizen lives in harmony . He is patient and tolerant to others faith and religion. He believes in equality and liberty. He is man of principles and ideals.

Thank you very much

Thus, He is kind, truthful , sincere , Cooperative and he is proud of the Nation's culture and heritage. He always tries to protect it. He never tolerate terrorism , injustice and corruption. Thus , he is a real source of power and strength.

Thanks!!

Expansion of ideas on “Clothes mean nothing until someone lives in them”.

“clothes mean nothing until someone lives in them”.

Food ,clothes and shelter are the basic necessities of man. Every person is cautious about clothes and particularly Indian people are more cautious about attire. In India almost in every state different types and colors of clothes are used.

I stand strong with the Mar Jacobs quote of “clothes mean nothing until someone lives in them”.

However clothes in all their abundance mean nothing until owned or worn by someone.clothes makes people lively and comfortable because clothes are not just about what is on the outside but also about what is on the inside. Clothes are the medium of communication that needs no words. After all it is the person that adds meaning to the clothes and not the other way around.

Expansion of ideas on "Manners maketh man."

"Manners maketh man"   -William Horman

When I read the lesson 'On Saying please ' I understand the importance of politeness Man is social animal and for good behavior in society manners are most essential. That's why it is said that "Manners maketh man." The proverb ‘manners maketh man’ means that politeness and good manners are essential to humanity.

Good manners distinguish man from animals so manners are essential to every human being. Good manners molds and shapes our personality. It is one type of ornament which enlighten our personality.

This proverb is centuries old, and it reminds us to pay attention to the way in which we act in society. Many people would argued that good manners are essential if we want to demonstrate our respect for other people and to make a good impression on everyone that we meet. Having good manners is very important if everyone in society is to coexist in peace and harmony.

Expansion of ideas on " The wise man has long ears and a short tongue".

The wise man has long ears and a short tongue.

God gave man two ears and one tongue so
that we listen twice as much as we speak.
-- Arab proverb
Wise man has long ears and a short tongue is a Swedish term. It means that the person who is wise listen more , so the concept long ears is related to listening. And Short tongue means speak less. If we take examples from history great men were great listeners. Wise men speaks with their behavior and work , on the contrary common men speak more and work less. So wise people listen more and more to others and increase their knowledge. Listening means acquiring good knowledge and wise men always have a good knowledge.
So Egyptian proverb says that "A man's ruin lies in his tongue."

Expansion of ideas on "Attitudes are the real figures of speech "

Attitudes are the real figures of speech

Edwin Friedman said that communication does not depend on syntax, eloquence, rhetoric or articulation, but on the emotional context in which the message is being heard. “Attitudes”, he said, “are the real figures of speech.”

Attitudes define your confidence. Attitude includes voice modulations, posture and the physical appearance. Speech not only includes words, but the way you deliver it to the audience, that is the audience should be interested in your words. Attracting the audience requires a positive and cheerful attitude.

Thus, attitudes are the real figure of speech.

Expansion of ideas on "Argument is the Worst kind of communication"

Argument is the Worst kind of communication

One valuable quality God bestowed upon human being which separates humans from other animals is communication. Communication helps two or more people exchange their thoughts, ideas, feelings, emotions in a meaningful way. For good communication use of kind and polite language is essential. Polite communication develops good relationships between people.
But when people don't agree with each other, they often resort to arguments to express their displeasure. In an argument people feel angry, they are ready to take revenge. People use abusive language and it affects relationship.
So communication is the gift of God.Use it for developing good relationship among people, otherwise it becomes worst kind of communication.

Expansion of idea on "If speech is silver, then silence is golden "

If speech is silver, then silence is golden

'If speech is silver, then silence is golden'. This proverb implies that silence is a priceless gift. If you wish your company to be valued by others, sometimes keep quiet, listen and pay attention while others are speaking.

The adage says: 'Deep rivers run quietly.' This adage signifies people who are deep thinkers and have deep knowledge about life, prefer remaining quiet.

‘Empty vessels make most noise.' This maxim means people who are shallow, with little knowledge, talk maximum; their gibberish and chatter cause maximum hurt and anguish. So again in order to not to be the cause of anguish for others, our elders have suggested to us observe silence.

The value of silence is great, especially when it is desirable.  You don’t need to speak every-time to create an impression. Sometimes, people leave better impressions who display the strength of character by remaining quiet and calm during challenging moments. Remember, that “words are like arrows, you can’t take them back after you let them back.”

So speak only when it is essential otherwise keep silence. Because silence is the Best medicine of all problems

Expansion of ideas on "Face is the index of mind "

Face is the index of mind
There is an English proverb that says , "The face is the index of the mind". It is absolutely true because our facial expressions are indicate what is going in our mind. If someone is angry his anger which is in his mind immediately reflects on his face also other mental states are reflects on our face. Most of the astrologers guess the forecast of any person with the facial expressions of the people. The Mind and Minds activities are thinking, feeling and Willing and all these activities are clearly seen on the face so with the help of facial expression one can understand the feeling of any person. That is why Jerome Quotes. "The face is the mirror of the mind, and eyes without speaking confess the secrets of the heart."

Expansion of ideas 'Action speaks louder than words '

 Action speaks louder     than words

Great Marathi saint Tukaram said that,"Bole taisa Chale tyachi vandavi Paole." It means the person who behaves according to his speech is the real person.

If you say that actions speak louder than words, you mean that people's actions show their real attitudes, rather than what they say. This expression is sometimes used to advise a person to do something positive.

We have many examples of such personalities in India. One of the prominent examples is the example of our great Father of the nation Mahatma Gandhij. He spoke less and worked more. He always used innovative ideas and people followed him. He started wearing Khadi and banned foreign clothes . His every action was message for people at that time.

This message also useful for everyone because if we speak less and act like what we speak it is good message to our children.

i) Farmers of kerala begin their activities
Ans:- b) after the New year festival of vishu
ii) Vishupakshi begins singing its vitthumkaikkottum
Ans:-c) in the first week of March

It is April and another Vishu came and is gone. It is the new Year festival of Kerala, and closely related to the beginning of agricultural activities. In the  past, immediately after Vishu paddy would be sown and agricultural activities would start anew. Farmers believed in the rain god and the rains never failed them. But even it therains played truant, therewas one bird -vishupakshi  which never failed to wake up farmers with its vitthumkaikkottum (seedand spade) song. Every year starting in the first week of March, the bird was heard   singing its never - ending vitthumkaikkottum. It was a remainder to thefarmers and background music to the beginning of farming activities. I have never heard any other bird, except the cuckoo, that sing sobeautifully as vishupakshi. And thissond would be heard only in m@rch and April.
This summer, the bird might have watched that even if it urges the people   to take to the seed and shovel nobody has seeds to take and it might also have  observed that in the district which was once called the granary of Kerala, there  is no place for sowing the seeds and it might have decided not to sing or even
visit us (I think it is a migratory bird. It sings even at midnight. It perchaseonly on the top of very big trees and their felling may be the reasons why the bird did not turn up). Not only are the song and sound of vishupakshi missing
today; there are many other birds which won't be seen and heard again

We were an agrarian people. And my main hobby in my early teens was to wander through paddy field to see the different kinds of birds and how they nest. On the outskirts of the paddy fields, there had been any coconut trees and black palm trees. Beautifully crafted nests of the weaver - birds thookkanaam kuruvi&al would be seen dangling from the ends of palm leaves.  Hundreds of these little birds would land on the paddy to squeee the milk from the tender rice.

Researchers recently announced the &arth could actually withstand up to  200,000 times the current population. They arrived at this figure by calculating the amount of heat a humatfbody emits, and only at 1.3 million billion would the earth be too hot to be habitable. And though it would feel like being In a can of sardines if that figure were ever reached, the earth is capable of comfortably sustaining a population several times the current 6.5 billion.
In fact, fertility is actually on the decline worldwide. Though population has grown, the rate of growth has fallen sharply. Twenty years ago, the UN   projected thal population would reach 11.16 billion in 2050, today they say it will reach only 9.37 billion. Moreover, human population will stabilize at about 11.5 billion. While this figure is almost twice the current one, it is hard!)' claustrophobic.
True, the demands on resources are heavy even now, but this is e due  to the manner in which these resources are being used. In fact, figure show that a bigger population does not amount to greater consumption. Over 20% of the world's people in the highest - income countries account for 86% of total  vate consumption expenditure - the poorest 20% a tiny 1.3% With just 5% of  ete world's population, the US consumers about 40% of the world'* reéources. Would you say the US is overpopulatied ?
Concems on scarcity of food are equally baseless. In fact. global food production has actually kept up with population growth. If people starve in many
countries it is not because food is becoming scarce; it is because those people cannot afford it. We imagine the prospect of a bigger population only in terns
of the lifestyle and technology of today. By2050 , or even 10 years from now, technology and even human bodies will have done much to adapt and innovate from the resources available, and rnade more inventions for sustenance and comfort.

It was the last I ever saw of her.
My brothers and I were transported in a cattle car to Germany.
We arrived at the Buchenwald concentralion camp one night weeks later and were led into a crowded barrack. The next day, we were issued informs and identification numbers.

"Don't call me Herman anymore." I said to my brother. "Call me 94983." I was put to work in the camp's crematorium, loading the dead into a handcranked elevator. I , too, felt dead. Hardened, I had become a number.
Soonmy brother and I were sent to Schlieben, one of Buchenwald's sub-camps
near Berlin.
One morning I thought I heard my motheds voice,

"Son," she said softly but clearly. "I am going to send you an angel." Then I woke up. Just a dream. A beautiful dream.
But in this place there could be no angles. There was only work. And hunger. And fear.
A couple of days later, was walking around the camp, around the barracks,  near the barbed-wire fence where the guards could not easily see. I was alone. On the other side of the fence, I spotted someone: a little girl with light, almost luminous curls. She was half hidden behind a birch tree.
I glanced around to make sure no one saw me. I called to her softly in German.
'Do you have somethingto eat ?" She didn't understand.
I inched closer to the fence and repeated the question in Polish. She stepped forward. I was thin and gaunt, with rags wrapped around my feet, but the girl  looked unafraid. In her eyes, I saw life. She pulled an apple from her woollen jacket and threw it over the fence.
I grabbed the fruit and, as I started to run away, I heard her say faintly, "I'll see you tomorrow."
