Speech on 'World Literacy Day'

Q.7.B
Prepare a speech on World Literacy Day (8 September )with the help of the following points.

1. Importance of the day.
2. How you can help to eradicate illiteracy in your area.
3. Benefits of being literate for an individual 4.How literate India will help an individual 5.How literate India will help the country to progress

Honourable Principal, respected teachers and my dear friends,

September 8th marks the International celebration and awareness campaign on literacy. The holiday was declared by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 1964. Year round UNESCO seeks to keep literacy high on national, regional and international agendas. Through literacy programs UNESCO aims to create a literate world and promote literacy for all.

Today one in five adults (around 796 million) lack minimum literacy skills, with two-thirds of them being women. 67.4 million children throughout the world are not enrolled in school and miss out on basic fundamentals of education.

UNESCO states the importance of literacy on their website:

“Literacy is a human right, a tool of personal empowerment and a means for social and human development. Educational opportunities depend on literacy.

Literacy is at the heart of basic education for all, and essential for eradicating poverty, reducing child mortality, curbing population growth, achieving gender equality and ensuring sustainable development, peace and democracy. There are good reasons why literacy is at the core of Education for All (EFA).

A good quality basic education equips pupils with literacy skills for life and further learning; literate parents are more likely to send their children to school; literate people are better able to access continuing educational opportunities; and literate societies are better geared to meet pressing development .”

We invite you to celebrate this international awareness day by taking time to read to your child, visit the library or donate to a book drive! And if you’re looking for a way to give back to the community, we encourage you to donate books or your time to local literacy non-profit, Page Ahead, who recently distributed their two-millionth book to a child in need!
Thank you
Very much

Unseen passage for practice

Q.3 (A) Read the first activity, read the extract and do the activities that follow.
[12 marks)

Al Complete (2)

i) The Globalization and digitalization have a great influence on  ........................................

Ans:- education and parenting

ii) Inevitably, schools and parents need to join hands together for  .........................       .
Ans:- to ensure that the child turns into a learner for life.
iii) Only academic excellence is useless if...............
Ans:-if the child is unable to apply knowledge in daily life.

iv) If we continue with conventional education system and value the same.....
Ans:-we Indians may end up as the back office of the Western world.

Just as any major economic or social change has an implication on every aspect of life, globalization and the digital revolution have not only changed the way we work and play but must also change the way we educate and parent our kids.
This generation of children needs to be geared to do more right-brained tasks that involve creativity, problem solving strategies, communication and emotional engagement. This, in turn, demands a major shift in the way the Indian education system works and what parents deem important for the child to learn.
If our schools continue to focus on mathematical, analytical and mechanical abilities that are rapidly being replaced by Google, machines and technology and as parents we continue to value and perpetuate that focus, we Indians may end up as the back office of the Western world. The criterion for success has changed. We have moved from a Knowledge Age to the Creative Age. Simply 'knowing things' does not serve any purpose. We have Google for that now. Getting 100 percent in a written paper is of no use if the child is unable to apply knowledge in daily life. Schools and parents have to work together to ensure that the child turns into a learner for life.
Our focus should be to prepare our children and youth for adult life success. Success tomorrow will depend on how our children ultimately make use of the knowledge and information that they receive today. 'How' we educate our children may prove to be more important than 'What' we are educating them for. We need to teach them to tap their innate greatness. We need to hone •the right-brained creative skills in our kids. We need to shift the focus from IQ to EQ.

The underlined words refer to
(i) ............................

A5 Personal Response (2)

'Success tomorrow depends on the knowledge and information we receive today'.

On the following morning. when the flower once more stretched forth  its tender petals, like little arms towards the air and light the daisy recognized the bird's voice, but what it sang sounded so sad. Indeed the poor bird had good reason to be sad, for it had been caught and put into a cage close by the open window. It sang of the happy days when it could merrily fly about, of   fresh green corn in the fields, and of the time when it could soar almost up to

the clouds. The poor lark was most unhappy as a prisoner in a cage. The little   daisy would have liked so much to help it, but what could be done Indeed, that was very difficult for such a a small flower to find out. It entirely forgot  how beautiful everything around it was, how warmly the sun was shining, and how splendidly white its petals were. It could only think of the poor captive bird, for which it could do nothing. Then two little boys came out of the garden; one of them had a large sharp knife, like that with which the girl   had cut the tulips. They came straight towards the little daisy, which could
not understand what they wanted.
"Here is a fine piece of turf for the lark," said one of the boys, and began to cut out a square round the daisy, so that it remained in the centre of the  grass.
"Pluck the flower off' said the other boy, and the daisy trembled for fear' for to be pulled off meant death to it; and it wished so much to live, as it was  to go with the square of turf into the poor captive lark's cage.
"No let it stay," said the other boy, "it looks so pretty."

And so it stayed and was brought into the lark's cage. The poor bird was lamenting its lost liberty, and beating its wings against the wires; and the little daisy could not speak or utter a consoling word, much asit would have liked to do so. So the forenoon passed.

Sub: - Complaint regarding irregular water supply.

 Respected Sir,

I the resident of  Adarsh Nagar, Colony, would like to draw your attention towards the irregular water supply in our locality. We are facing this problem, since the time the new building has been constructed in our locality, due to which the water supply has been disrupted.

Due to the construction of the new building, the water supply has been portioned and now the supply has been interrupted as earlier the regular water supply used to be 3 hours in the morning and the same in the evening, but now the same has been reduced to just an hour as it needs a new water supply unit for individual building.

I hope for your contribution in solving this problem. Looking forward to your reply.

 Thanking you.
