1 A) Read the extract and do all the activities.

I was quite happy getting into IIT, but my joy was short lived. At Solapur I had not seen any building which was more than three storeyed. Mumbai however was full of skyscrapers. At IIT, most of the students and professors used to converse in English whereas my English was very poor. I had my entire education in Marathi. My spoken English was quite pathetic. Not only did I have a very weak vocabulary, but, my pronunciation also was terrible and my construction of English sentences very awkward to say the least. Due to all this, I was feeling quite lonely and terrified in Mumbai in general and IIT in particular. I had developed an inferiority complex and wanted to run away from IIT and even Mumbai.

One day, I was sitting at my mess table in the hostel sipping tea when a senior guy came and sat on the chair adjacent to me. He was a convent educated guy with fairly sophisticated English- at least spoken or colloquial English. He was a bit arrogant and wanted to pull my leg. He tried to engage in some conversation with me and started pointing out errors in just about every sentence or everything that I said. After about 5 minutes he walked away after insulting me.

I felt extremely humiliated and upset. As it is, I was feeling quite depressed and diffident and this incident was the last straw. I was almost broken. I felt out of place there and literally wanted to run away to Solapur that very moment. However, it was only my self-esteem which stopped me. Suddenly, a feeling of determination and strength came over me and gripped me. Despite hailing from Solapur, if I could be a rank holder in the school, college and IIT with many awards in Mathematics, there must be something right with me. Why should I give up? And that too for a silly and small thing like English? I was not to give up anymore, and I was determined to fight back.

Since normal walking requires that the heel of the foot should strike the ground before the toes, these early shoes used to wear out quickly at the heel, prompting shoemakers to reinforce the heel, and so creating heeled shoes. Women have been wearing high-heeled shoes for centuries in the pursuit of fashion. However, regularly wearing shoes with high heels can be hazardous. The biggest risk, perhaps, is losing your balance and breaking an ankle. Wearing high heels interferes with your normal gait. They throw your weight forward, making it difficult to sustain upright balance. They force you to use a lot of extra muscular effort to keep from falling forward. Much of this extra effort is concentrated in the lower back arch, which can lead to back pain. Experts warn that high heels can also result in a variety of foot problems, including metatarsalgia, which is pain in the ball of the foot. Another condition called Morton's neuroma, which is 10 times more common in women than men, is caused by the thickening of tissue around a nerve between the third and fourth toes. However, if one cannot resist wearing heels, the following tips can help to keep your feet healthy. Always wear the correct fit. Have both feet measured the next time you buy shoes. You will probably find that one foot is larger than the other-always buy shoes to fit the larger foot, never buy shoes that are to tight. Buy shoes later in the day when your feet are a bit swollen. Never wear a heel higher than 6.5 cm. only buy heels that you are comfortable

Section II - Poetry and Appreciation

3. A) Read the extract and completed the activities given below.

When I had money, money, O!

I knew no joy till I went poor;

 For many a false man as a friend

Came knocking all day at my door.

Then felt I like a child that holds

A trumpet that he must not blow

 Because a man is dead;

I dared Not speak to let this false world know.

Much have I thought of life, and seen

 How poor men's hearts are ever light;

 And how their wives do hum like bees

 About their work from morn till night.

So, when I hear these poor ones laugh.

 And see the rich ones coldly frown

Poor men, think I, need not go up

So much as rich men should come down.

When I had money, money, O!

 My many friends proved all untrue;

 But now I have no money,

O! My friends are real, though very few.

A1 State whether the given sentences true or false according to theme of given extract.

False

d) In poverty, poet gained true friends.

A2 Describe the life of poor man depicted in the given extract.

Answer :-The poet depicts the life of a poor man as simple yet contented. Poor men have light and carefree hearts. They earn honestly and live with satisfaction. Their wives work cheerfully and continuously from morning till night. Though poor in wealth, they are rich in happiness, unity, and peace of mind.

A3 'Real happiness is connected with satisfaction not with money.' Justify the given sentence in your words with proper example

Answer :-The poem clearly shows that money cannot buy true happiness. When the poet was rich, he had many friends, but they were false and selfish. After becoming poor, he lost money but gained real friends. Similarly, a person earning less but living honestly and peacefully feels happier than a wealthy person surrounded by fake relationships. Thus, satisfaction brings true happiness, not money.

B) Appreciation.

Read the extract and write an appreciation of the poem given below.

Is anybody happier because you passed his way?

Does anyone remember that you spoke to him today?

This day is almost over, and its toiling time is through;

 Is there anyone to utter now a kindly word of you?

Did you give a cheerful greeting to the friend who came along?

Or a churlish sort of "Howdy" and then vanish in the throng?

 Were you selfish pure and simple as you rushed along the way,

Or is someone mighty grateful for a deed you did today?

Can you say tonight, in parting with the days that's slipping fast,

That you helped a single brother of the many that you passed?

Is a single heart rejoicing over what you did or said;

 Does a man whose hopes were fading now with courage look ahead?

Did you waste the day, or lose it, was it well or sorely spent?

Did you leave a trail of kindness or a scar of discontent?

As you close your eyes in slumber do you think that God would say,

You have earned one more tomorrow by the work you did today?
