1. A) Read the extract and complete the activities given below.

I stayed put. Gauged the leader Langur's target sight and scanned the area visually. Took some steps. Stopped again. A fresh scat was lying before me on the trail. The bluish-purple flies were hovering over it. I was sure that the Leopard was somewhere near. The distant alarm call of four-horned antelope was adding to the chaos. I barely walked around 15 metres and stopped. I had apparently entered in the sanctum sanctorum of a miracle called Leopard. But the big cat was not visible. It is an elusive animal. The surroundings were reminding me that I was all alone time and again. As I moved forward on the trail to Pitezari, the fading alarm calls were still heard in the background. I could tell instinctively that the Leopard had moved away.

Meanwhile, I saw a man standing at a distance with a stick in his hand. As I approached, he appeared spooked due to alarm calls of the Leopard. We greeted each other. He was Raju Iskape from Pitezari. He had come to collect logs but retreated due to the Leopard's movement. Raju was amazed at my regular solitary visits to Umbarzara, the haven for Tigers, Leopards and Sloth Bears. We stopped under a Kusum tree to take a break. We both felt a bit relaxed. Now we were four eyes, four hands with a stick. Then we both resumed our walking tour.

There was one tiny track that broke out of the main trail. "I will take this route, you go straight," said Raju and turned right. I kept walking straight until I climbed a familiar hillock. I crossed the cement pillar and stones stacked by Forest Development Corporation to mark the boundary of the forest compartment. Took another trail after climbing down. Walked across a beautiful Mahua tree loaded with reddish-brown leaves. The ground under the tree was cleaned very well. The thought instantly flashed in my mind- 'I'd lost my way. Next moment, I found  another dusky trail. Hastily I took that trail which took me from a narrow gorge to an open field. The area was surrounded by hillocks of dry deciduous tropical forest. I turned back to spot the sun. Now, the geographical west was set. The dusky trail had vanished. Good Heavens! I was lost. Completely lost in this jungle, That too at a very dreadful time! The sun was melting down like a fleeting runner

Q2A) Read the following extract and complete the activities given below.12

To read a lot is essential. It is stupid not to venture outside the examination 'set books' or the textbooks you have chosen for intensive study. Read as many books in English as you can, not as a duty but for pleasure. Do not choose the most difficult books you find, with the idea of listening and learning as many new words as possible: choose what is likely to interest you and be sure in advance, that it is not too hard. You should not have to be constantly looking up new words in the dictionary, for that deadens interest and checks real learning. Look up a word here and there, but as a general policy try to push ahead, guessing what words mean from the context. It is extensive and not intensive reading that normally helps you to get interested in extra reading and thereby improve your English. You should enjoy the feeling which extensive read-ing gives. As you read you will become more and more familiar with words and sentence patterns you already know, understanding them better and better as you meet them in more and more contexts, some of which may slightly differ from others. Some people say that we cannot learn to speak a language better with the help of a book. They believe that the spoken language and written language are quite different things. This cannot be true.

II) The writer advices reading books for pleasure and not as a duty.

Answer:-

Ii)Reason:

Because very difficult books force you to constantly look up words in a dictionary, which kills interest and slows down real learning.

II) Reason:

Because when you enjoy reading, you naturally read more, which helps you improve your English language skills effectively.

A3 'Do not choose the most difficult books you find Explain.

Answer:-

The writer means that choosing very difficult books makes reading tiring and discouraging. It interrupts your flow because you must look up many new words. Therefore, choose interesting and easy-to-understand books so that reading remains enjoyable and helps you learn naturally.

A4 Express your opinion on the writer's advice "Read as many books in English as you can"

Answer:-

In my opinion, this advice is very useful because reading many books helps improve vocabulary, sentence structure, and understanding of the language. It also makes learning enjoyable and builds confidence in using English in real-life situations.

And all that's best of dark and bright

 Meet in her aspect and her eyes;

Thus mellowed to that tender light

Which heaven to gaudy day denies.

One shade the more, one ray the less,

Had half impaired the nameless grace Which waves in every raven tress

Or softly lightens o'er her face;

Where thoughts serenely sweet express, How pure, how dear their dwelling-place.

And on that cheek, and o'er that brow,

The smiles that win, the tints that glow,

A mind at peace with all below,

A heart whose love is innocent!

Section A (Prose)

Reading for comprehension, Language Study and Summary.

1. A) Read the extract and complete the activities given below.

In April 2005, we started to look for a good variety of traditional rice. It was one of our neighbours in the village, a businessman from Mumbai who owned land, who suggested that we plant a local scented variety of rice. Most of the farmers in and around the village of Peth had switched over to hybrids. The younger generation of farmers thought I was crazy to ask for the 'desi' variety, as they called it. My regular visits to the villages around searching for a good traditional variety also did not yield any results and we were almost giving up hope.

I decided to give it one last try and spoke to Baban's father and some other elders. After many meaningful conversations, they mentioned the name of Kasbai. Kasbai is a traditional long-grained rice variety which has a distinct aroma, though much milder than Basmati. It's a long-duration crop and most of the older people remembered growing it years ago. But they all shook their heads when I asked them about the seeds and told me that it had 'disappeared.

The tales of Kasbai made us more determined to get it. We decided that if we did manage to get some seeds this would be a great rice to grow. I thought the government may know something about it. A visit to the agricultural officer was enlightening. He had not even heard of this rice variety. He said the villagers were taking me for a ride and there was no rice by this name. He rattled off the names of a number of latest hybrids and even offered to give me some of them free of cost for a trial. Cursing myself for wasting time with him I moved on to the next destination.

This time it was the Adivasi Mahamandal at Kasa which buys rice from the Adivasi villagers on behalf of the government. Kasbal did not figure in their files. A good indication why people did not grow it any more. The market itself did not recognize the rice, so if you grew it you would not be able to sell it. However, the officer incharge here had more knowledge of rice and did remember Kasbai being sold to him a few years ago.

A1) State whether the following sentences are true or false and rewrite.

1) The author started to search for traditional rice in March 2005

2) Kasbai is short duration crop.

The duck was excellent is swimming. In fact, better than his instructor. But he made only passing grades in flying and was very poor in running. Since he was slow in running, he had to stay after school and also drop swimming in order to practise running. This was kept until his webbed feet were badly worn and he was average in swimming. But average was acceptable in school so nobody worried about that, except the duck

The rabbit started at the top of the class in running but had a nervous breakdown because of so much swimming.

The squirrel was excellent in climbing until he developed frustration in the flying class where his teacher made him start from the ground up instead of the treetop down. He also developed a "Charlie horse from overaction and then got a C and climbing D in running.

The eagle was probelm child and was disciplined severely. In the climbing class, he beat all the others to the top of the tree but insisted on using his own way to get there.

At the end of the year, an abnormal eel that could swim exceedingly well and also run, climb and fly a little, had the highest average and was valedictorian.

Summary:

Once the animals decided to open a school to prepare for the challenges of the new world. The curriculum included running, climbing, swimming, and flying. All animals had to take all subjects. The duck, rabbit, squirrel, and eagle faced problems because each was forced to learn something beyond their natural abilities. The duck’s swimming became average, the rabbit got a nervous breakdown, and the squirrel was frustrated. Only an eel who could do a little of everything became the valedictorian. The story teaches that education should respect individual talents instead of forcing uniformity.

When I feel depressed, spending time in nature helps me calm my mind. The fresh air, green trees, and chirping birds make me feel alive and hopeful again. Like the poet’s “brighter garden,” nature gives me comfort and positivity. It reminds me that there is always light and beauty even in times of darkness.

A4 Name and explain the figure of speech of the following line. 2

'Never mind faded forests'.

1. A) Read the extract and complete the activities gien below.

At length Soapy reached one of the avenues to the east where the glitter and turmoil was but faint. He dragged himself toward Madison Square, for the homing Instinct survives even when the home is a park bench.

But, on an unusually quiet corner, Soapy came to a standstill. Here was an old church, quaint and rambling and gabled. Through one violet-stained window a soft light glowed, where, no doubt, the organist loltered over the keys, making sure of his mastery of the coming Sabbath anthem. For there drifted out to Soapy's ears sweet music that caught and held him transfixed against the convolutions of the Iron fence.

The moon was above, full and radiant; vehicles and pedestrians were few; sparrows twittered sleepily in the eaves or a little while the scene might have been a country churchyard. And the anthem that the organist played cemented Soapy to the iron fence, for he had known it well in the days when his life contained such things as mothers and roses and ambitions and friends and immaculate thoughts and collars.

The conjunction of Soapy's receptive state of mind and the influences about the old church brought a sudden and wonderful change In his soul. He viewed with rising horror the pit into which he had tumbled, the degraded days, unworthy desires, dead hopes, wrecked faculties and base motives that made up his existence.

And also in a moment his heart responded thrillingly to this strange mood. A strong impulse moved him to battle with his desperate fact. He would pull himself out of the mire and would make a man of himself again; he would conquer the evil that had enslaved him. There was time; he was young yet; he would resurrect his old eager ambitions and pursue them without faltering. Those solemn but sweet organ notes had set up a revolution in him. Tomorrow he would go into the roaring downtown district and find work. A fur importer had once offered him a place as driver. He would be somebody in the world. He would ---

Soapy felt a hand laid - on arm. He looked quickly around into the impassive face of a policeman.

I began to see that I had done an impertinent thing in breaking in on the privacy of this man's scientific pursuit with a face like miner

After an hour the photographer opened an inner door. 'Come in,' he said severely. I went into the studio. 'Sit down,' said the photographer, I set down in a beam of sunlight filtered through a sheet of factory cotton hung against a frosted window.

The photographer rolled a machine in to the middle of the room and crawled into it from a behind. He was only in a second-just time enough for one look at me- and then he was out again, tearing at the cotton sheet and the window panes with a hooked stick, apparently frantic for light and air.

Then he crawled back in to the machine again and drew a little black cloth over himself. This time he was very quiet in there. I knew that he was praying and kept still. When the photographer came out at last, he looked very grave and shook his head.

'The face is quite wrong.' he said.

'I know, I answered quietly, 'I have always known.'

He sighed.

'I think,' he said, 'the face would be better three quarters full.'

'I'm sure it would be, 'I said enthusiastically, for I was glod to find that the man had such a human side to him. 'So would yours.' In fact I continued, 'how many faces one sees that are apparently hard, narrow, limited, but the minute you get the three-quarters full they get wide, large, almost boundless in- But the photographer ceased to listen. He come over and took my head in his hand and twisted it in sideways.

I thought he meant to kiss me, and I closed my eyes.

But I was wrong.

He twisted my face as far as it would go and then stood looking at it.

He sighed again.

Then he went back to the machine and took another look.

'Open the mouth a little,' he said.

When he came to Mrs. Adis's cottage he paused a moment.Only a small patch of grass lay between it and the road, and he looked in at the lighted, uncurtained window. He could see Mrs. Adis stooping over the fire, taking some pot or kettle off it. He hesitated and seemed to wonder. He was a big, heavy, working man, not successful, judging by the poverty of his appearance. For a moment he made as if he would open the window, then he changed his mind and went to the door instead. He did not knock, but walked straight in.

The woman at the fire turned quickly round.

"What, you, Peter Crouch!' she said. 'I didn't hear you knock.

'I didn't knock ma'am. I didn't want anybody to hear."'How's that?"

"I'm in trouble. His hands were shaking a little.

'What have you done?"

I shot man, Mrs. Adis.

"You?"

Yes I shot him."

"You killed him?"

"I don't know."

For a moment there was silence in the small, stuffy kitchen. Then the kettle boiled over and Mrs Adis mechanically put it at the side of the fire.. She was a small, thin woman with a brown, hard face, on which the skin had dried in innumerable small, hair like wrinkles. She was probably not more than forty-two, but life treats some women hard in the agricultural districts of Sussex, and Mrs. Adis' life had been harder than most.

What do you want me to do for you, Peter Crouch?" she said a little sourly.

"Let me stay here a bit. Is there nowhere you can put me till they've gone?"

"Who's they?"

"The keepers."

"Oh you've had a quarrel with the keepers, have you?"

In 1945 in Bay Roberts, Canada, a Year-old boy saw something in a shope window that set his heart racing. But the price-five dollars was far beyond Reuben Earle's means. Five dollars would buy almost a week's groceries for his family.

Reuben couldn't ask his father for the money. Everything Mark Earle made fishing, Reuben's mother, Dora, stretched like elastic to feed and clothe their five children.

Nevertheless, he opened the shop's weathered door and went inside. Standing proud and straight in his flour-sack shirt and washed-out trousers, he told the shopkeeper what he wanted, adding, "but I don't have the money right now. Can you please hold it for me?"

"I willl try," the shopkeeper smiled. "Folks around here don't usually have that kind of money to spend on things. It should keep for a while."

Reuben respectfully touched his worn cap and walked out into the May sunlight. The bay rippled in a freshening wind that ruffled his short hair. There was purpose in his loping stride. He would raise the five dollars and not tell anybody.

Hearing the sound of hammering front a side street, Reuben had an idea.

He ran towards the sound and stopped at a construction site. People built their own homes in Bay Roberts, using nails purchased in burlap sacks from a local factory. Sometimes the sacks were discarded in the flurry of building, and Reuben knew he could sell them back to the factory for five cents apiece.

That day he found two sacks, which he took to the remaining wooden factory and sold to the man in charge of packing nails. The boy's hand tightly clutched the small five-cent pieces as her ran the two kilometers home.
